Installed 7 amp UPS battery on Bajaj Pulsar 180
During my Spiti trip my bike’s battery conked off, since I rely heavily on the electric start and on top of it the horn wasn’t working either, I had to get the battery replaced. However when I went to market to get battery for my motorcycle I was taken aback by the fact that battery prices has risen sharply and the 9amp batter which is standard fitment on Bajaj Pulsar’s was costing a whopping Rs. 1250!
At this point I remembered the idea Manik had given to me a while back about replacing the OEM battery with the 7 ampere sealed UPS battery. Apart from the fact that the UPS battery only costs half as much as the 9 ampere motorcycle battery, it is also totally maintenance free.
So I went ahead and bought the UPS battery on Friday and finally installed it on my motorcycle and it worked fantastically. Another added advantage of using the UPS battery has been reduction in the weight of the battery by half. Here is a photo of both the batteries sided by side, the smaller one is the UPS battery.
Keep watching this space for more updates regarding the performance of the battery!

Hi Yogesh,
I own a Bajaj Pulsar 150DTSI Sep-2005 ( electri start ) & 45k done, want to check with you is that the battery fitted by company is no more working..
have seen your idea abount replacing the standard battery with 7 amprere sealed ups battery.
as you have allready replaced in your bike, so should i go & get the same done in my bike as well.. require your suggestions at the earliest with the perfomance as well.
Thanks & Regards
John
John, batteries performance has been satisfactory during my recent trip to ladakh and upon return even after a few days staying idle the bike started without any fuss, so I feel it’s a good option.
However I am not quite sure how much the battery life would be, so this is one aspect that you would need take a gamble on. Rest should be ok.

Hi Yogesh,
Would appreciate if u have any further comments on the 7amp battery u used. how long did it serve u? and where can i get one in mumbai(that is if u r from mumbai).
Thanks
Hello Sajid, well it’s been 21months and the battery is working so far. I have no idea about Mumbai as I live in Delhi, but these batteries are easily available at the shops selling inverters and UPS.
Thanks Yogesh for ur reply. And yes I have also now decided to go for 7 amp battery. But, I am not a techie and I have one major concern and that is wat about the sizes of these batteries. I am not sure but i think the ups batteries are a bit smaller in size. If that is so then how can i fit it.
Thanks.
Sajid I have to fit it vertically and I haven’t faced any problem since, despite riding through tough and bumpy terrains.
HEY DUDE THE BATTERY IS SMALLER THAN D NORMAL ONE RITE.U SAID U FIT IT VERTICALLY THATS FINE. BUT SURE NA ITS FITS. AS MY MECHANIC SAID IT IS SMALLER and problem hoga.plz help dude….
Of course it does, otherwise how would I be running my bike for past couple of years?

George its been a little over 2 years since I have started using it in my motorcycle and it is only now that it has started getting weak.
As for you new bike’s battery, well just make sure that the battery fluid level is within permissible limit and it would be alright.
But one questions still remains…
Whether an UPS battery will be able to withstand the road vibrations and will slowly lose it’s efficiency & life ?
Well it lasted two years on my motorcycle, http://www.yogeshsarkar.com/blog/2009/08/31/long-term-review-of-7amp-ups-battery-in-pulsar-180/
That too when I don’t locally ride my motorcycle much.
