Rohtang Pass reopened for light traffic

According to report in Times of India, road to Rohtang Pass was reopened for light traffic on Wednesday (30th May 2008), just two hour after a Nepali woman delivered a child on top of Rohtang Pass:

Vishnu Maya was searching for work at 13,000 feet when she went into labour. The poor Nepali woman delivered a girl at Rohtang Pass just as the road was being opened to traffic on Wednesday for the first time this summer.

Maya as on her way to Lahaul in search of work along with her husband and their elder daughter. “We came from Manali in a vehicle, which dropped us some distance away from Rohtang Pass and we had started walking. We walked for 45 minutes and when we reached the pass, I knew the baby was about to come,” said Maya.

Locals helped the woman deliver her baby. “I thank all those who came to my rescue,” added Maya.

Havildar Tara Chand, who was present at the Koksar rescue post on the other side of Rohtang pass, took the woman and her family to his post for rest. “We asked them to go to a hospital for a check-up,” he said.

Tashi Tondup, who had travelled with Maya from Manali, said the newborn baby is “lucky”. “Just two hours after her birth, the road was opened for light vehicles. Now, people need not travel on foot here.”
