Manali – Leh highway officially reopens for traffic
Manali – Leh highway has just been officially declared open for all types of traffic and with it the Ladakh 2009 Travel season has also just begun.
The strategic Manali-Leh National Highway 21 re-opened for vehicular traffic Thursday after remaining closed for six months. The highway was closed in mid-December due to heavy snowfall.
“The crucial 475 km Manali-Leh highway reopened for the traffic this (Thursday) morning,” said S.K. Doon, commander of the 38 Task Force of the General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) – a wing of the Border Roads Organisation that maintains the highway.
“All types of vehicles can now ply on the highway,” Doon told IANS.

Though the complete infrastructure (camps at Sarchu and Pang) would take some time setting up, so for motorcycle travelers it is best to wait for a few days or do Srinagar – Leh highway while going to Ladakh and take the Manali – Leh highway while coming back.
For car and taxi travelers willing to do Keylong/Jispa/Darcha – Leh in a single day, there shouldn’t really be any problem.
