Sounak yesterday asked my what spares I’ll be carrying on this Ladakh trip, well here is a list of spares and a few major tools I’ll be carrying with me.
- CDI (carrying it on all my trips since the original one conked off during my Manali 2004 ride)
- Sparkplug
- Chain link
- Clutch and front brake leaver
- Accelerator and clutch wire
- Headlight, taillight and indicator bulb
- 1 liter engine oil
- 90w gear oil to lubricate drive chain
- WD40
- Front and rear tyre tubes
- Electric compressor
- Tyre irons
- Tyre Valve Key
- Tyre Patches and solution
- OEM toolkit
- Set of ring spanners
- Multiple attachment screwdriver
Apart from that I am also carrying a few more things like elfy, electrician tape, m-seal etc.
Today I also got the high beam of my motorcycle fixed so now the bike is good to go.
Another update is that Bhuwan had to call of the ride after starting from Jaipur today, as he got an urgent call and thus had to turn back. So once again this is going to be a solo ride and to tell you the truth, I am kind of happy about it, even though I will surely miss Bhuwan’s company, as I loved riding with him on our Ladakh 2007 trip.
Departure date as of yet is not finalized and I am contemplating on which date to leave now, especially since if I leave day after tomorrow (proposed start date initially, after the change yesterday), I will end up traveling on the Manali – Leh highway on Tuesday and I have Tuesday Fast which I keep every Tuesday and one which basically restricts me to a fruit diet for the whole day. So I guess I’ll have to keep that in mind as well now.
Well I wished for a trip that wasn’t planned and kind of spontaneous and it sure is turning out that way, even before it has begun!

Thanks for the detailed list…you seem to be very well prepared 🙂
I have a ladakh trip in mind too but never though it needs so much prep. Can u also tell what clothing and food are u carrying? Also some pointers about your riding gears and luggage will be helpful.
Sounak I am carrying Xelement Cordura riding jacket, United Colors of Benetton Sweater, Jeans, Pants, Tshirts and warm lower. Apart from that I am also carrying warm weather riding gloves, textile and leather gloves for cold weather and a monkey cap.
All this is going to be carried in my Cramster Saddle Bag, Zanskar Backpack and another small backpack tied to the rear seat and I’ll be using my AGV helmet on this trip.
As for food, I am carrying 1 ready to eat veg biryani (Veetee), 1 maggi cup noodles, 250gm almonds, 250gm petha (for Tuesday fast) and a packet of cream biscuits.
Dear YS, i’ve seen ur list for trip and i think it’s too much preparation for trip coz if u r really wanna adventure trip then what’s the need of too much bike parts, accessories n other things? if u really wanna secure trip then u may choose open jeep so u can see the all things with all security as u wanna.. i never seen any four wheeler who can carry all motor parts n accessories when they gone there.. so rethink again n try to reduce bike parts n accessories for trip
Ved I do not travel for “adventure” and neither do I travel on motorcycle because I feel it is “adventurous”.
I travel to see beautiful places and I use my motorcycle to travel because I feel it is the best way to explore the world.
So while you might feel that it is adventurous to be traveling without any spares and then begging others in the middle of nowhere to give you lift for the next 500-1000km, so you can purchase the part that got busted, I would rather have them with me so I can replace them when the need be and be on my way.
Dear YS!!!… my not the meaning that without any spares… i just told only about too much spares.. n my advice to u 4 something faith on universe, nature n mountains.. they are always help us so no need of mini spares shop with u if ur bike serviced n checked before trip ..
i was share my opinion with u coz i feel u may doing too much preparation n may be ur bike much loaded with xtra spares.. else it’s ur own wish what u think about trip..
Ved can you please let me know which spares you think in the above list are “too much”?
Thanks Yogesh….this really sets my perspective right on how to prepare 🙂
So are u planning to keep us updated during your trip?
Oh and what about rain gear?
Sounak I would be updating my blog as well as BCMTouring while traveling, I had done this during my 2006 and 2007 Ladakh trips as well. And this time I am carrying my laptop with me as well (first trip with it).
As for rain gear, never had any. As it is usually not available in my size. So yes like all other trips, I’ll be getting wet again. Hopefully this time the riding jacket would provide some relief.
Great…so when are u starting?
This week, likely on this Friday.
Me and vaibhav are starting too from mumbai on 19th september.Maybe we can meet up @leh.
cheers
Sure thing Amit, you have my MTNL number, right?
