Manali – Leh highway officially closed for 2012

Border Road Organization has decided to officially close the Manali – Leh highway for 2012 from today (11th November 2012) onwards, since Rohtang Jot and other high altitude passes are expected to receive even more snowfall in the coming days.

While this does not means that the road is actually closed or that BRO has withdrawn, it does mean that in case of a heavy snowfall, chances of BRO clearing it would be slim and those daring to travel on the Manali – Leh highway would need to do so on their own risk.

Meanwhile, Manali-based Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) is planning to put up rescue posts on both sides of Rohtang Jot from November 15 onwards to help any local/traveler who may get trapped while attempting to cross the pass.

So guys and gals, now you need to either take to aerial route to Leh or the land route from Srinagar, which too is expected to close in the coming weeks and will leave flights as the only viable options for most to travel in and out of Ladakh, till around May next year, when road reopens again.
