I recently got my MTNL broadband connection disabled, after being a satisfied user for several years. I did this, because MTNL has started serving popups.
Here is what I had to go through, to surrender MTNL broadband connection and keep the phone as well as number.
- Go to Sanchar Haat, find out the person you need to see to surrender the connection.
- Exit Sanchar Haat, walk in to main building, take the elevator to 5th floor and find the guy you are supposed to see. Wait as he continues to finish his work, before taking your application and preparing a challan for surrendering DSL modem.
- Take the challan, take the elevator down to ground floor and exit the building.
- Now walk back to the back of the building, go down into an underground godown and give the challan copies and modem to store in charge.
- Take the stamped copy of challan, climb out of the underground godown, walk back to front of the building and take elevator to 4th floor.
- Find the person who is supposed to log the whole thing. Submit application, challan copy and ID proof. Hold off your anger as he accuses you of forging your mother’s signature in the application (phone connection is in my mom’s name). Wait for him to log the whole affair and tell you that you need to go home and wait for connection to be disabled in the next couple of working days.
- Come back home empty handed (without any sort of receipt). Keep wondering whether or not they have done their work, till you can finally confirm from their call center, 4-5 days later. And then breathe a sigh of relief, as same also gets mentioned in your landline bill.
I guess I should thank my stars that I didn’t’ face any major issue in surrendering MTNL broadband connection, but then again, the experience was anything as easy as cancelling services with any private player (with the exception of Reliance Broadband).

You are not alone my friend. There are many who have faced the useless service of MTNL broadband. I use to call there call center for tech support and they were like- oh man!!! why do these people go for MTNL service.
Using MTS 1500 plan right now…
Barring a handful of times, I never spoke with their tech support. Send an email in or register complaint through IVR, let them call you back or send DSL technician and then talk to them. Way easier to get issues resolved this way, especially since DSL technician of our area was an alright fellow and got things done ASAP.
Airtel is a lot more stable, but then a lot more expensive as well and comes with FUP (on their 4mbps plan with 80gb FUP, costs 2.35k with taxes). For most of the 6-7 years I had MTNL Triband, I liked it.
I also want to surrender my MTNL brodband. I want to know that I gave Rs.1100 to get this brodband will I get whole amount after surrendering mtnl brodband?
Hilarious! After reading this I felt that I’d just finished reading a script of a TV serial and could imagine how at every step you had to keep your cool. Shall soon be going through the same exasperation……….!
