Srinagar – Leh Highway has finally reopened for vehicular traffic in 2016, several days after the initial opening date BRO had set for the highway, owing to snowfall in the region.
While the highway is technically open, it is in terrible state and it is highly likely that in the next couple of weeks, it will close down for a few days due to avalanches or snowfall. Add to that, traffic at Zoji La would be highly regulated and would be allowed for limited duration during the day.
Making the journey from Srinagar to Leh uncertain and adventurous for the travelers. If you’re planning to take this highway in next few days, please keep this in mind and make sure you have enough time in hand to deal with delays.
Those planning to drive to Ladakh in self-drive rentals, like last year, there is ban on taking these vehicles to Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso and for these places you will have to hire local taxi or motorcycles.
