BRO has announced today the official closure of Manali – Leh Highway for 2016, due to the amount of frost forming at this high altitude road, making travel risky.
While officially the road has been closed, vehicles will continue to ply between Manali and Leh, at their own risk. Heavy snowfall is likely to happen soon at high altitude passes, which can lead to road closure for a few days. BRO won’t be in a hurry to clear the snow now, so in case you are unfortunate enough to get stuck en route due to snowfall, you’re on your own. Due to frost and black ice, driving also becomes risky.
Additionally, dhabas at Bharatpur, Sarchu, Pang and Debring will no longer be operational. Most of the hotels and restaurants in Leh have already closed for the season.
With the situation in Kashmir still tense, it isn’t advisable to take the Srinagar route back, making Manali route the only viable option for those traveling by road. Hence it is best to now fly to Leh, or postpone your plans until next year.
